Beth's Thoughts on Diet and Balanced Skin

Let me just start by saying, I'm not an expert.  :)

But, as a self-proclaimed hippie who LOVES playing with trial and error in ALL things related to health and balance overall, I've learned a thing or two about diet.  And I have tried out MANY cleanses, diet methods (I don't believe in "dieting" in the traditional sense of the word) and even supplements designed to support better health.  I've been an omnivore, vegetarian, vegan, and just about everything else along the way.  And, as much as NOBODY wants to admit it, diet does in fact contribute to skin health.  At least as far as my experience goes anyway...

Here's the part where I tell you what to do.  cause I'm bossy.

We'll get there... but first:

You all know it.  It's all over my website.  My story is this:  PCOS, endometriosis, multiple food and environmental allergies, asthmatic sufferer since like, 11, and possibly before then but that's when things got really real, if you know what I mean.  As such, I have a HIGH propensity toward inflammation in the body, hormone imbalance (those jerks are HARD to get under control, am I right?) and fatigue is a constant threat just lingering behind enemy lines.  Not to mention insulin resistance, estrogen dominance, tumors, and cysts galore!  I know I'm making my existence seem SUPER cool.

Doctors.  I've been to a LOT of them.  Specialists in particular, and I have a few surgeries under my belt to boot.  Did they help?  Not really.  But I think my body carries the will of my mind sometimes... it's incredibly stubborn, and I can't blame it.  It wants what it wants.  Don't we all? So, while I love my docs, taking synthetic substances for the rest of my life just to EXIST just doesn't do it for me.

So I did what anyone would do!  I changed my diet.

Wait, are you telling me that not everyone does this?  Oops.  Well, you SHOULD at least LOOK at your diet, and it's as simple as this:  If you're eating things your body doesn't like, it's NOT going to behave!  Yes, I just compared the complex, intricate and incredibly scientific physiologic processes of the human body to a 2 year old throwing tantrums.  Because, like a 2 year old, if you give it what it actually wants and needs, it will behave. MOST of the time.... (remember when I said I'm not an expert?)  Minus the attitude of the 2 year old.  And you don't have to worry about spoiling it, because our bodies NEED to be spoiled, unlike 2 year olds.  :)

So here's the thing.  I'm not going to tell you what diet you need to be on, because I 100 thousand percent believe that it's different for everyone. I have tried a LOT of different diets, and it's a process!  You're probably not going to nail it on the first try...  It took me understanding that I am deficient in a certain enzyme, particularly the enzyme that breaks down grains, to understand that a diet high in refined carbs is just not going to work for me.  And since I've eliminated what I consider to be poisonous for my health from my diet, I have felt SO. MUCH. BETTER.  My insulin resistance has calmed down, my hypoglycemia is under control, and my boyfriend absolutely LOVES that hanger is no longer an issue.  FUHREAL.  When he met my family, they warned him about the hanger, and how if all of a sudden I began to hate him for no reason, I was probably hungry and to get me some food ASAP, no questions asked.  Cause that's how bad it was.

Even if you don't want to change your diet, I can say that I FIRMLY believe that hormones affect your skin.  And not just the ones that your brain produces.  It's in a LOT of the foods we consume, and I highly, highly recommend organic whenever possible!  This is especially important if you consume meat - if an animal was treated with hormones, some residuals may be hiding in the fibers of that bite you just plopped in your mouth.  On a biological level, and from my own personal experience, I believe it can mess with the balance of your body's ability to regulate hormones.  It's not like your body already works hard enough just to keep you alive... Don't give it more to worry about and just avoid it in the first place!  We have more and more options becoming available to us these days - take advantage! And, contrary to popular belief, skipping meat or avoiding altogether isn't the WORST thing that could happen.  ;)

but you guys.  IT MAKES MY SKIN HEALTHY TOO.

I wish I could tell you that there's a magical topical application for the best skin of your life.  But unfortunately I just don't think there is.  Good health takes a synergistic effect throughout the whole body, and since it's the largest organ, we certainly shouldn't be leaving our skin out of the equation when it comes to what we eat.   Give it a shot!  You'll be glad you did.

If you have questions on diet or my journey, feel free to email me!  (

Have you tried different diets for overall as well as skin health?  I'd love to hear your stories!

What to Expect from Hippie Skin

So you're super stoked cause you've just decided to become a hippie.

Your friends think you're weird.  It's cool though, they think we're weird too.  So what now?  Here's  what you can expect from your Hippie Skin:

1.  Expect to break out.

Seriously.  It sucks.  But if you've ever had a facial you know that there's bound to be a break out and it's no different with Hippie Skin.  First, your skin needs an adjustment period to get used to the new product.  Secondly, and most importantly, Hippie Skin is pure and it's able to penetrate skin at a deep level, meaning it's going to get down in there and pull out any impurities that may be hiding under the surface.

So basically this means you're going to break out.  If you have normal skin, the breakouts should be minimal and clear up quickly.  If your skin is like Bethany's and you have hormonal acne, it's going to take a while.  :(  But the important thing to remember is that it will get better!

2.  Expect to have break outs.

At Hippie Skin, we believe in being honest.  And we may not know everything there is to know, but we do know this:  Throughout your life, you're going to break out.  That's just the way it is.  So if you're expecting perfect skin all the time, we're sorry.  We haven't found that unicorn yet.  (You can be certain that the moment we do, we will be ALL over sharing it with you)!

However, you CAN expect to have fewer life-altering, debilitating, painful breakouts. So that's a plus.

3.  Expect to have really freaking soft skin.

Hooray!  We aren't kidding.  Your skin really will be really freaking soft.  You may even be compelled to make everyone you know touch your skin, it's that soft.   It's okay - they already think you're weird for being a hippie, so use that hippie cred!

4.  Expect people to notice your skin.

After a time, you may notice people complimenting your skin or your "youthful radiance" more often.  NBD.

5.  Expect to find a zillion ways to use Luxe.

We don't really know how this keeps happening.  But we're cool with it.  We use it for face and body, but it's also been used (that we know of) as a deep conditioner for hair, a makeup remover, makeup primer, diaper rash cream, for sunburns, tattoos, stretch marks, minor cuts, bruises, etc. (Some of these uses have NOT been tested by Hippie Skin, nor are we making any representation as to said uses).  Cough, cough, legal jargon... Feel free to share all the totally awesome ways you use your Hippie Luxe!

Here's the bottom line:  Expect to get to know your skin.

A lot of people struggle with this statement - the great thing about Hippie Skin is it encourages you to listen to your skin.  After a time, you'll know just how much moisture you need, how much your skin can take and you'll also get to know how it changes with the seasons.  Why is this?  We like to think that by eliminating all the junk and fillers of traditional beauty products, Hippie Skin allows your skin to live more naturally; in turn, putting you more in tune with it.  Pretty cool, eh?

A Blast from the Past - Why we use Glass!

My Hippie Skin is all packaged in glass...

What is this, 1950?

Nope.  But we LOVE the 50's.  The reasons we use (and recommend) glass containers for our products are pretty simple.  Number One:  We LOVE our planet.  And we want to see it thrive for generations to come!  Glass is FAR more easy to recycle than plastic is, and with much less toxicity, and that's the bottom line.  We highly, highly, highly encourage you to recycle your glass jars!  We are working on a program for our online consumers to return their jars for a discount on new product, but the logistics are not yet in our favor. (Someday, when we grow up, we want to give you this option!)  In the meantime, take a few extra minutes out of your day and find a glass recycling receptacle in your community.  You'll feel good about yourself, and that's what we're all about here at Hippie Skin!

Number Two:  Glass is better for your face.  Now before you go taking us quite literally, we don't mean the glass itself is better for your face, but the product inside the glass is better for your face.  Did you know plastics can leach chemicals into your products?  All it takes is the right conditions:  Compounds that can cause chemical reactions, temperature, and/or time.  We don't know about you, but we sure feel better knowing that our precious Hippie Skin hasn't been altered by the environment that cocoons it before it gets to your face!

So, while this does cause the shipping expense to be higher and the nature of Hippie Skin to be a bit more fragile, we hope that you feel, as we do, that it's worth the extra time and money to promote a safer, healthier planet for ourselves and future generations.

Love your Face!

Hippie Pits - All About Hippie Fresh

Because Hippies Don't Have to Stink!

Natural Deodorant... ??

Seems like a good concept in theory, but you're terrified to make the leap.  Right?  The concept of odorless pits without chemicals - is it even possible?

But, there are some very important steps that MUST be taken, and we're going to outline them here.  First, a little background:  The commercial stuff.  You've been rubbing it into your armpits since you can remember.  Keeping an extra in your purse, in your gym bag - and we've all made the mistake of leaving it in our car during the summer.  So basically years and years of yuckiness has gone into your armpits.  The compounds in these commercial brands are meant to block odor and stop sweat.  Now research suggests that prolonged use of these compounds can lead to breast cancer, among other things.  Yikes!

So you've decided you want to try a different approach, and you've ordered your Hippie Fresh.  It smells fantastic and you can't wait to try it out, especially since you've heard such great things!

Hold the Phone, Eager Hippie:  You HAVE to detox.

Health nut or not, detox is a word most people have a love/hate relationship with.  It usually means a short period of pain and suffering followed by short-lived bliss.  When it comes to going natural with your pits, the first part may or may not be true; however, the bliss is LONG lived.  Hooray! Results will vary with each individual, so please be patient!  Ready?  Here's how to get glorious, non smelly pits - even after hosting a baby shower with 20 people in 80 degree heat on a mid summer day, when your AC can't seem to pump fast enough so it's really like 95 degrees inside your house.  When your crazy auntie asks to smell your pits, bare em with pride!  (This may or may not have actually happened to me, haha).

the DETOX process:

Throw away your old stuff!  Put it in the garbage and get rid of it.  If you don't, you MIGHT be tempted to go back to it, and then you'll have to start all over again.  Next step?  Don't wear any deodorant for at least 2 weeks.  Wait, WHAT?  I know, it sucks.  But I'm serious.  This is the BEST way.  Winter is usually a good time to do this - after Christmas and holiday parties are over.  Disclaimer:  You're going to STINK.  And it's going to be unlike any stink you've ever stunk.  Feel free to wash your pits 3-4 times per day with mild soap and water.... I did!

If you have to - you can lightly mist Hippie Fresh spray on during this time if it's really bad and you need to socialize with other humans.

Why does it smell so horrifying?  Oh, no big reason really - it's just all the chemicals and nastiness making its way back out of your body.  You may also see some minor breakouts here as your pores begin to unclog.  Don't fret!  It won't last forever.  They're just doing what pores are supposed to do.

So I'm detoxed.  Now what?

Once you've completed your detox (you will have a good idea of when this is, just listen to your skin) you can start using Hippie Fresh Paste, hooray!  Please be advised that Hippie Fresh does contain baking soda, which can be irritating to the skin, so it's important not to over-apply.  Here's how I apply my Hippie Fresh:

1.  Mist Hippie Fresh Spray onto the skin.  Let it dry.

2.  Apply a small dab of Hippie Fresh Paste to the armpit.  Do not rub, smear, or overdo it.  You really just need a little.  I promise!

You're all set!  This should last all day - and after detoxing, you may find you don't even need to wear deodorant every day!  I know it sounds counter-intuitive for a company that makes natural deodorant to say that you really don't need it every day, but we're all about honesty and simplicity here.  If you don't need it, don't use it.  I really only wear mine about once a week these days, but I do use the Fresh Spray every day.  You'll learn to know what your hippie pits need!

There you have it Hippies, glorious pitties await.  Love your Face!  And your Pits!

The Hippie System

The Hippie System is simple - follow these easy steps for a simply great skin care regimen!

STEP ONE:  Cleanse.  We don't need to iterate how important cleansing is, but it IS important to mention that skin regenerates at night while we sleep, so having a clean, well moisturized face at bedtime is imperative for ageless, healthy skin!

For best results with Hippie Skin, you'll want to cleanse 2 times per day.  Here's how we do it:

A.M.  In the morning, place a small amount of Hippie Honey on the fingertips, then mix with a little water to make it more pliable.  Apply to face in upward circular motions, and leave on as long as you like, i.e. while you brush your teeth, before you get in the shower, etc.  Rinse well with warm water, using a microfiber cloth to remove any traces of dirt or extra honey.  Follow with Hippie Mist and Hippie Luxe for added moisture.  (Instructions to follow)

P.M.  Before bed, apply Hippie Luxe to the face in upward circular motions, using more than you would to moisturize.  Massage into face, allowing the oils to break up dirt and remove makeup.  For added benefit, place a hot microfiber cloth over the face until it cools to allow the pores to open up and provide a deeper cleanse.  Rinse with warm water.  It is not necessary to scrub the face; however, if you wear a lot of makeup you can use the microfiber cloth to gently remove any extra dirt.  Follow with Hippie Glow for an ageless treatment or Hippie Luxe for added moisture.

STEP TWO:  Tone.  Hippie Honey and Hippie Luxe open up the pores for deep cleansing, so it's VERY important to follow with a toning spray.  Hippie Mist is formulated with soothing essential oils and witch hazel to gently tone the skin, providing a protective barrier for bacteria and dirt, and it prepares the skin for moisture.  Shake well, hold a few inches from the face and mist over the skin.  NOTE:  If your skin is very oily, it may not be necessary to moisturize after this step.  Listen to your skin!

STEP THREE:  Moisturize!  Hippie Luxe is not only a great cleanser, but moisturizer as well.  After cleansing and toning, apply Hippie Luxe to the face in small amounts as needed.  It's best to do right after cleansing, as the skin will absorb it best.  If it feels oily, gently blot with a microfiber cloth.  Hippie Luxe is also a fabulous makeup primer and works very well with mineral powder.

BONUS:  Apply Hippie Luxe to the entire body, then step into a hot shower or bath.  It is not necessary to cleanse the skin - simply step out and blot dry with a towel and enjoy luxuriously soft skin!  **Also great for cracked heels.

Oil Cleansing - Why We Love It

Many people I encounter openly balk at the notion of using oil blends to combat their oily skin. As their wheels begin turning, I see the skepticism mounting and their eyes searching for the lunacy they know must be hiding under my "knowledgeable" facade.

The oil cleansing concept is actually quite simple.  When we have oily skin, our skin is producing too much oil, causing a build-up of sebaceous secretions in the pores, leading to enlarged pores, pimples, and acne.  When our skin is too dry, our skin isn't producing enough oil, and it causes our skin to become tight and flaky, which in addition to discomfort, can cause our skin to have an appearance of early aging due to much needed hydration.

The skin care industry has educated us to the following "facts":

If your skin is oily, you must dry it out.

If your skin is dry, you must hydrate it.

The truth is, only one of these "facts" is actually fact.  Can you guess which one?

Let's discuss.  What if you combat oil with oil, and you hydrate with oil?  Stay with me here.  It's a little known fact that oil actually dissolves oil.  So... IF, instead of drying out oily skin, we work to moisturize it with oil, and the oil breaks down the oil in our pores, imagine what happens next!  And what if "oil" has the ability to penetrate pores and provide moisture from the inside out?  AND what if oil blends actually have the natural (oh, we LOVE that word) support to balance the pH in skin?  And what if we have to use less oil since it hydrates better?  This means it lasts longer, you spend less $$, we make less product, and we reduce our impact on both nature AND waste (and your wallet).

WHOA.  So basically oil cleansing is awesome.  It supports balance on BOTH ends of the spectrum.  What if you have normal skin?  Great!  Oil blends support an ageless appearance by hydrating just as much as your skin needs!

Okay, so now the skepticism is giving way to curiosity. The next step to proving that I am in fact not insane is to take a leap of faith and try it for yourself.  Please note that there are many ways to use our oil blends, but in keeping with the basics, I'm going to explain just one:

Step 1:  Open your bottle and take a deep whiff of the deliciousness that's about to happen to your skin.  It's important!

Step 2:  Place a small amount of oil on your fingertips and gently begin to massage it into the skin, using as much or as little as you feel is necessary.

Step 3:  Take a hot towel or washcloth and place it over the skin, letting the pores open up to deeply absorb the oil.  Leave the towel on until it cools.  You may want to repeat a few times.  It's up to you!  Listen to your skin!

Step 4:  Rinse with warm water.  You can use the washcloth to remove any extra debris, makeup, or dirt - but you really don't need to.  Rinsing with warm water is usually sufficient to get your skin as clean as it needs to be.

Step 5:  If your skin is dry or if you feel you need a little more moisture, use a little more of the oil blend to hydrate as needed.  All done!

Disclaimer:  You're going to want to touch your skin - and have everyone else touch it too, because it's going to be really freaking soft.  This is why we named our first oil blend HippieLuxe.

There you have it.  Oil cleansing really is a simple effective way to support healthy, balanced skin.  Try it, love it, and let us know what you think!

Namaste - Bethany

Why Does My oil blend Melt in the Sun?

We believe that one of the very important factors that sets Hippie Skin apart from other natural skin care lines is that of wax and butters.  Most natural products contain Shea butter or beeswax.  At Hippie Skin, we make a point not to include these in our oil-blended products.  Why, you ask?

First, we'll state that we don't consider them to be bad for the skin - we love natural products!  However, waxes and butters are not as easily absorbed into the skin as oils are.  Butters and waxes sit on top of the skin, providing a barrier, which makes them great at protecting the skin, but if the other good-for-skin ingredients can't penetrate the butters or waxes, they can't penetrate your skin and provide the benefits your skin loves.

By excluding these things from our products, we're allowing the oil blends to penetrate your skin and support assimilation by the body, which in turn supports benefits not only to the skin but to the internal organs and body systems.  Ever notice a boost of energy after applying your HippieLuxe?  Coconut oil is said to have energetic therapeutic benefits within the body!

Waxes and butters provide temporary moisture, while oils get in and hydrate inside and out.  Your skin will stay softer, longer, and your body will thank you!

If you have any questions or comments, please don't hesitate to let us know what's on your mind.  Thanks for your support of Hippie Skin, Namaste!
